Throughout my career, I have heard, different people, at different levels, tell me that they do not need development because they ‘already know enough’. Some have told me that they do not have enough time to develop because they are too busy ‘doing’. Learning is a constant and development is progressive. The ability to truly understand and accept yourself is one of the first steps in enhancing your emotional intelligence. Once you are able to identify your areas of development and put a name to them, you are on the way to personal development and growth. Remember, this is a gradual process and sometimes you will not get visible results over night.
How do you recognise when you need development?
When things are not going our way, it’s easy to bury our head in the sand and hope they disappear and when we resurface, we can continue to live life as it was. If this is you, this is one of the first warning signs that you need to learn how to handle difficult situations. This is where your learning begins.
You must be able to put words to why you are unable to deal with difficult situations, as an example.
- Do you lack self esteem to face things head on?
- Do you avoid conflict at all costs?
- Are you a people pleaser?
- Is your fear bigger than your confidence in yourself?
Once you are able to put to articulate this, then you need to understand where you need to grow and develop and what it is you want to achieve. On this part of the journey, this is where you need to out together a personal SWOT to be able to identify the areas to develop.

What does it take to develop yourself?
70% of your development is up to you and 30% is up to your coach/mentor/manager/leader. Personal development starts with you and the decision you make to develop yourself. You must have conviction on this journey, so that you are able to consistently learn, grow and put things into action.
